Course highlights
Module One: Introduction to Relationship Counselling and Core Systemic Skills Introduction to relationship counselling, systemic interventions, power and abuse, considering culture, identity, intersectionality and difference and the solution focused approach. Module 2: Couple Motivation and Crises Looking at “couple fit” and adult attachment, conflict, trauma, triggers, neurodivergence and affairs. Application of drama triangle, PAC and transactional analysis. Module 3: Intimacy and Loss Understand the challenges of modern dating at different points in the life cycle. Dating, commitment and New Relationship Energy. Talking about intimacy and sex, pursuer: distancer relationships, sexualities and relationship breakdown. Looking at split agendas, divorce and separation. Module 4: Working with Families Introduction to family counselling and the therapeutic alliance, listening to the child’s voice in the family, looking at family breakdowns and the child’s needs, patriarchy, incels and toxic masculinity. Module 5: Endings Therapeutic endings, consolidation of course learning and participants’ presentations The course will be assessed using reflexive journals, role play, case study, presentation, family essay and portfolio. |
About the course Facilitator
Cate Campbell, MA, is a psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer specialising in sex, relationships and trauma, working with individuals, couples and families. She is senior accredited by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP), accredited by the College of Sexual & Relationship Therapists (COSRT) for both practice and supervision, and is an EMDR Europe consultant.
From 2009-2016 she was a lecturer with the Relate Institute, then joining the Foundation for Counselling & Relationship Studies to develop and deliver training from undergraduate to masters level. She taught CBT at Amersham & Wycombe College from 2010-2016. She has been a visiting lecturer at University College London and delivers training for other agencies including Relate and the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists, where she is also a trustee. She is a clinical supervisor in private practice and has been clinical manager for agencies including Relate Isle of Man, Cymru, Plymouth and Mid-Wiltshire.
She is the author of The Relate Guide to Sex & Intimacy, Love & Sex in a New Relationship, Contemporary Sex Therapy and Sex Therapy: The Basics and co-hosted The Real Sex Education podcast.
